stuff like that

. our projects

In general...we have so many ideas, and the [ever-clichéd] so little time in which to make them happen. For now, what follows is merely a brief sampling of some of the areas we would like to pursue. Our upcoming new web site will organize this information and present it better. Also, some of these are old ideas which, for certain reasons, may not be useful or interesting anymore.

  • Community System
  • Misc
  • Resources for Information
  • Surviving the Collegiate School
  • Weblog

  • CMS (content management system)
    .

CMS will be an easy to use web-based system for web page creation and editing on an organized web site. Our primary focus is providing teachers and students on our school web site with an easy way to publish work that they feel would be useful to others. Though it's not yet completed, we have some assorted parts of it working.

    Community System
    .

The community system is something that we've been thinking about for a while, but still researching at this point. One of the challenges is figuring out how to manage the signal-to-noise ratio in growing communities, without sacrificing individuality or freedom of expression. Another issue is simply finding and creating mediums in which communities will thrive. Generally, we need to address what to do about moderation, trolls, long-term discussions, and the multitudes of other problems communities face.

    Miscellaneous
    .

There's going to be a project page containing smaller pieces of software and other things that don't require their own dedicated pages. This page will become the home of, among others, the /goto script - a very simple anonymous web browsing system. URL obfuscation is one of the features on the drawing board. The point of this script as opposed to many of the others out there is its simplicity - right now, the current working version is under half a page of code. While this will increase, the theme of simplicity will remain in focus. This is the type of thing you can expect to find on the misc page once it's finished/started. Currently, we have our little countdown Javascript, which counts down to a specified date on a web site.

    Resources for Finding Information
    .

Finding what you're looking for can be easy if you know how and where to look. We're working on a small guide to finding information on the World Wide Web, complete with links to useful "finding" sites, along with specific pages that we've found to be helpful on various subjects. Part of this idea comes from another, which was an educational resource site. Of course, with the advent of Google, this whole project is arguably unnecessary.

    Surviving Collegiate
    .

One of our immediate projects is surviving our school. More difficult than it appears, this project tests our multi-dimensional-conflict handling skills, abilities to resist the temptations of learning, as well as superficial human interaction capabilities. Taking control over our lives, this project is perhaps the most grueling we've ever attempted.

    Weblog
    .

The weblog is a format for displaying news that has enjoyed much recent popularity. There are weblog-exclusive sites such as slashdot, in addition to the many web sites that just use a weblog-style news display. We began working on this project partially for an independent study in school, but mostly for our own purposes. Our main goals were to learn some Perl, and to come up with a useful application. We're still trying to decide what it will evolve into. Recently, we have decided to focus our efforts on evolving the weblog into a flexible and easy to use news system. We are evaluating some interesting ideas for community systems, and these applications will be greatly facilitated by having an existing fully-working system. In whatever direction we decide to take, the project will be open source - but there's still some work to be done.

    Wireless
    .

We are interested in wireless networking and networks, specifically 802.11b/g, but other standards and technologies as well. Our involvement with this field is just beginning, but we do feel that it has great potential for not only information access, but also potential challenge to the large corporation-controlled networks. For some more information, have a look at the NYCWireless Project. We see a large future for this field.
